The bacon and onion add to the flavour of the vegetable rather than overpowering it. Deglazing the cooking pan with a splash of balsamic vinegar and drizzling it over the finished dish would turn it into a warm salad.
450 g (1 lb) purple sprouting broccoli
1 medium onion, chopped small
2 rashers streaky bacon, chopped
pinch of grated nutmeg
50 g (2 oz) butter
1. Heat the butter in a large saucepan and gently fry the onion and bacon for a couple of minutes.
2. Add the broccoli and nutmeg, cover and cook gently, shaking frequently, until the broccoli is tender.
